Read the last column before the third. A ten pack at one reseller's list price works out at $103 a channel while the single license at the same reseller is $75, so the pack is a convenience for the installer, not a volume discount for you. DW's knowledge base adds a rule that matters here: a bulk key cannot be split into single licenses later, though it can be shared between servers in a merged system. If you might move two cameras to a second recorder next year, singles are the safer buy.

Enterprise makes sense for a managed service provider running many customers, or a company with several buildings that wants one login and one map. For a single site with fifteen cameras it converts a purchase you have already made into a renewal you have to remember, and DW's FAQ is clear that a lapsed Enterprise system stops recording after the grace period. That is a different risk profile from a Professional server that simply keeps running on the version it has. If you do move to Enterprise, user and device control shift to DW Cloud, which makes Digital Watchdog a vendor holding data about your sites. Teams working toward their own SOC 2 report usually want that vendor on the control map from day one, which is easier with compliance automation that maps your controls to SOC 2 than with a spreadsheet updated at audit time.
The conversion rule, in DW's words
Adding a site to an Enterprise organization converts its Professional recording licenses into credits, each worth a single device 24 month subscription. Partial conversion is not offered.
So a $75 perpetual license becomes 24 months of a subscription whose renewal price you have not seen yet. Ask for the renewal figure before converting, not after.
Five DW Spectrum license rules that decide whether you buy once or twice.
The key is locked to the server hardware ID
Every license key registers against the hardware ID of the DW Spectrum server it was activated on and cannot run on two servers at once. Replace the recorder, or change the network cards in it, and the hardware ID can change with it. DW has separate knowledge base articles on why the HWID changes and on multi NIC servers, which tells you how often it comes up.
Matters most when a recorder is due for replacement.
Three deactivations, then a phone call
A license key can be deactivated a maximum of three times. After that, reactivating it means contacting your Digital Watchdog sales representative. Deactivation also needs an internet connection from the server, because the request goes to DW's license registry. An air gapped recorder cannot release its own keys.
Matters most on sites that rebuild servers more than once.
Bulk packs do not split
A 4, 10, 20, 50 or 100 pack is one key. It can be shared among servers in a merged system, but it cannot be broken into singles for two unrelated sites. Price the packs against singles with that in mind, because the singles are often cheaper per channel anyway.

Trial licenses are one way
The trial license DW issues typically expires 30 to 60 days after activation, and a timed license cannot be deactivated or reactivated once it has expired. Plan the purchase order around that date rather than after it.

Free server licenses are real, and convertible
Blackjack recorders ship with complimentary recording licenses, and Blackjack Ai appliances ship with four analytics licenses. DW's FAQ confirms these free licenses convert to Enterprise subscriptions like any other. Count them before you order more channels.

DW sells AI three ways, and none of them is a $60 line item on its own.
MEGApix Ai, in the camera
DW's own AI cameras classify people and vehicles on board and send the events to Spectrum. No extra Spectrum license, but the analytics only exist on cameras you buy from DW, so a site full of Hanwha, Axis or older DW cameras gets nothing from this route without replacing them.
Blackjack Ai, on a server
A Blackjack Ai appliance runs server side analytics on streams from existing cameras. It ships with four DW Ai Server licenses, and more channels cost about $60 each as DW-AiSLSC001. The appliance is the cost, and it is a second server in the rack with its own storage and its own updates.
Metapix AI, as an add-on
Sold with an Enterprise subscription, and DW's FAQ notes add-ons are tied to the subscription's expiry: when Enterprise lapses, the add-on stops too. It is the route for a multi site organization already paying for cloud management.
The fourth route, which is the one we sell
Most people pricing a DW Spectrum license are not unhappy with the recording. They are unhappy with the alerts, because Spectrum on a third party or older camera has only the camera's own motion trigger to work with, and that fires on headlights, rain and the flag by the gate. A Blackjack Ai appliance fixes it at the cost of a server. Replacing cameras with MEGApix Ai fixes it at the cost of the cameras.
The cheaper fix is to leave Spectrum recording exactly as it is and run classification on the RTSP sub stream the recorder is already pulling. Our software connects to the camera or to the stream, finds motion with its own background model, labels each event person, vehicle, animal or package, and sends only the classes you chose to email, a webhook or Slack. No DW license changes, no second server, and the price is published. The honest reading: DW Spectrum Professional is inexpensive recording software, about $1.25 to $1.60 a camera a month over five years, and nothing on this site replaces it. How much does a DW Spectrum license cost?
A single DW Spectrum Professional recording license, part DW-SPECTRUMLSC001, sells for about $75 to $76 at US online resellers in September 2026, and the 4, 10 and 20 channel packs work out at $75 to $103 a channel. It is a one time purchase per IP camera with lifetime upgrades and no annual fee. Digital Watchdog does not publish a price itself.

Is DW Spectrum free?
The software is free to download and lets you connect cameras and view them live, but recording a channel needs a paid Professional license, and DW issues 30 to 60 day trial licenses for evaluation. Blackjack recorders from Digital Watchdog ship with complimentary recording licenses, which is the only way to get licensed channels without buying them.

What is DW Spectrum Enterprise?
DW Spectrum Enterprise is a subscription version of the platform, sold per device for 12 or 36 months through dealers, that adds cloud centralized user and device management, DW Maps and the DW Connect portal for managed service providers. It is optional. If the subscription lapses, recording continues for a 30 day grace period and then stops until it is renewed.

Can I transfer a DW Spectrum license to a new server?
Yes. Deactivate the key on the old server from the client, which sends a request to DW's license registry over the internet, then activate it against the new server's hardware ID. Each key can be deactivated a maximum of three times, after which DW sales has to reactivate it, and a timed trial license cannot be moved at all once it has expired.

Does DW Spectrum have an AI license?
Not as a stand alone add-on to Spectrum. Digital Watchdog sells AI as MEGApix Ai cameras with analytics on board, as Blackjack Ai server appliances that include four DW Ai Server licenses with more at about $60 each, and as the Metapix AI add-on tied to an Enterprise subscription. Classification software that reads the RTSP stream adds person and vehicle alerts to existing cameras without any of the three.

How many cameras can DW Spectrum record without a license?
None. DW documents that Spectrum needs a recording license for every channel it archives, one per IP camera, four or sixteen per analog encoder key. Live viewing works without licenses, and any complimentary licenses that came with a Blackjack recorder count toward the total.
