This policy explains what personal data the Motiondetection website collects, why it is processed, how long it is kept and what you can do about it. It covers motiondetection.com and the demo that runs on it. It is written to be read rather than to be defensible, and where a shorter honest answer exists, that is the answer given.
Who we are
Motiondetection is the operator of this website and the controller of the personal data described below. We can be reached at support@motiondetection.com, which is the only contact channel we run. There is no contact form on this site, on purpose.
What we collect
There are exactly three categories.
- Your email address, if you choose to give it, together with a hashed six digit confirmation code, the time the code was sent, the number of confirmation attempts, and whether and when the address was confirmed.
- Where the signup came from: the page you were on when the signup opened, and any utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign values present in the address you arrived on. This is how we learn which page and which channel produced interest, which is a large part of why this site exists.
- Standard technical data: your IP address and browser user agent at the moment of signup, and ordinary web server request logs. The IP address and user agent are kept with the signup for abuse prevention, because the confirmation code flow is rate limited per address and per IP.
We do not ask for your name, your company, your job title, or a phone number. We do not buy or enrich contact data. There is no advertising pixel, no analytics tag and no third party tracking script on any page of this site.
Why we process it
Your email address is processed on the basis of your consent, given by entering it and confirming it with the code, so that we can sign you in with it, send you the emails about your account and the product updates that follow. You can withdraw that consent at any time, and every message we send carries an unsubscribe link.
The IP address, user agent and rate limiting counters are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in preventing automated abuse of the signup and mail sending. Server logs are processed on the same basis, for security and for keeping the site running.
The demo and your footage
This is the part most people are here to check, so it is stated precisely. The demo detects motion in your own browser. A clip you select or upload is decoded locally by your device and is never transmitted to us or to anyone else. We do not store it, we never receive it, and closing the tab is the whole deletion process.
Classification works differently, and you should know that before you use it. For each event the detector finds, two or three small still images cropped around the moving region, roughly 320 pixels on the long edge, are sent through our server to a machine learning provider, which returns a category, a confidence value and a one line description. Only those crops are sent. The clip, the full frames, any audio and any file name are not.
The crops are not stored by us after the response is returned. If the footage you test with contains people, be aware that those crops leave your device. If that is not acceptable for the footage you have, use one of the bundled sample clips instead: the detection stage will behave identically.
Separately, and for the avoidance of doubt about the product itself: Motiondetection performs no facial recognition, computes no face templates and stores no biometric identifiers, on this site or in the product. That position is set out in full on the security page.
How long we keep it
Unconfirmed signups, meaning an address that was entered but never confirmed with a code, are deleted after 90 days. Confirmed signups are kept until you ask us to delete them or you unsubscribe, after which the address is removed. Confirmation codes are hashed, expire 15 minutes after they are sent, and are invalidated after five failed attempts. Web server logs are kept for 30 days.
Who else processes it
We use a small number of processors, each for one job, and the list is published rather than described:
- A hosting provider, which runs the servers this site is served from and holds the database row containing your address.
- A mail provider, which delivers the confirmation code and any later message, from the address support@motiondetection.com.
- A machine learning provider, which receives the event crops described above during a demo run, and receives nothing else.
We do not sell personal data, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not pass it to anyone for their own purposes.
International transfers
Some of the processors above operate in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, the transfer is made under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or another lawful transfer mechanism. You can ask us which mechanism applies to a specific processor, and we will tell you.
Your rights
If the GDPR applies to you, you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing that already happened. If you are covered by California law, you have comparable rights to know, to delete and to opt out of sale, and we do not sell personal data.
To exercise any of these, write to support@motiondetection.com from the address in question. We will answer within 30 days. Because the only identifier we hold is the email address itself, a request from that address is how we verify it, and we will not ask you for identity documents.
You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority in the country where you live or work.
Cookies
This site sets a session cookie and a cross site request forgery token, both of which are strictly necessary for the signup form to work securely. There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and no third party cookies, which is why you were not shown a consent banner: there is nothing to consent to.
Children
This is a business product and the site is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us an email address, write to us and it will be deleted.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top of this page changes with it, and anyone who has confirmed an email address is told by email. We will not broaden what we do with your data by quietly editing a page.
