Express+ starts cheapest, exacqVision stays cheaper than the editions most sites outgrow into.
The two vendors count the bill differently, so a fair comparison puts the same fifteen cameras and the same five years on one table.
exacqVision sells one license per camera, and the first year of software updates is inside it. The yearly renewal is called SSA and runs about $30 a camera on Professional and $37 to $53 on Enterprise. Exacq stopped printing dollar figures, so the numbers here are what US resellers list.
Milestone XProtect sells one base license per system plus one device license per camera, and updates are a separate yearly line called Care Plus. That is why XProtect Express+ looks cheap on the day of purchase and stays ahead, since its Care Plus renewal is lower than exacqVision's SSA. Both vendors' licenses are perpetual, and both keep recording if you stop paying for updates.
Neither product classifies motion on a camera that cannot do it. If your reason for pricing a new VMS is that alerts are noise, a license swap will not fix that, and the last section shows what does.

Top of each exacqVision range shown. Milestone figures use one reseller price list, exacqVision a range across resellers.
The Milestone arithmetic is a base plus fifteen device licenses plus Care Plus on each device, from the Milestone XProtect license cost page. The exacqVision arithmetic is fifteen EVIP-01 or EVENIP-01 licenses plus SSA renewals, from the exacqVision license price breakdown. Reseller prices move, so confirm part numbers with your dealer before you order.
Pick by ceiling and by what you will add, not by the day one price.
XProtect Express+ wins when
You have one building, one server and no more than 48 cameras. It is the lowest five year cost on this page. It has no edge storage support and no second site, so outgrowing it means buying Professional+.
exacqVision Professional wins when
You want a per camera price with no base license and a flat renewal. It is cheaper than XProtect Professional+ over five years for the same fifteen cameras, by about $850 to $1,500.
XProtect Professional+ or Expert wins when
You need several recording servers or sites, or failover so a dead server leaves no gap. Expert is the failover edition, and it is the most expensive row on the table.
exacqVision Enterprise wins when
You want the higher tier of exacqVision features on a per camera basis. Upgrading a single Professional license to Enterprise lists around $82, so you can start low and move up per camera.
If you are comparing more than these two, the video management software comparison prices DW Spectrum, Wisenet WAVE and AXIS Camera Station on the same fifteen cameras.
Neither license makes motion alerts mean something.
Many buyers price a VMS switch because alarms from older or third party cameras are noise. The recorder receives what the camera decides, so a new recorder inherits the same noise.
Stays on your VMS
Recording, the client, alarms and every license you own. Nothing is replaced.
Added beside it
Classification of each motion event as person, vehicle, animal or nothing, read from the RTSP stream the VMS already records.
Where alerts go
Email, Slack or a webhook with a cropped still. The Operate tier keeps 30 days of events for 5 users.
What it costs
$888 a year for 15 cameras, $2,988 a year for 60, published on our pricing page. No hardware.
MotionDetection works with ONVIF and RTSP cameras on either system and installs nothing on the recording server. If you are weighing AI hardware instead, the AI NVR software comparison prices that route.
How to compare quotes for these two systems.
-
1
Count cameras and sites
More than 48 cameras on a server, a second server or a second site rules out XProtect Express+.
-
2
Put updates on the same line
Add exacqVision SSA and Milestone Care Plus for every year you plan to stay current. A quote without them is only the first purchase.
-
3
Ask for part numbers
Compare against EVIP-01 and SSA-EVIP-01 on one side, XPEXPLUSDL, XPPPLUSDL and their Care Plus lines on the other.
-
4
Price the alert layer separately
If false alarms are the reason for switching, test classification on your own streams before buying new licenses.
exacqVision vs Milestone XProtect cost questions buyers ask before ordering.
01
Is exacqVision cheaper than Milestone XProtect?
It depends on the edition. For fifteen cameras XProtect Express+ costs $3,149 over five years, exacqVision Professional $4,140 to $4,807 and XProtect Professional+ $5,654. Express+ is cheapest but limited to one server, one site and 48 cameras.
02
How much does exacqVision cost per camera?
At US resellers a Professional IP camera license (EVIP-01) lists at $156 to $198 per camera with one year of updates. Renewals run about $30 a camera a year on Professional. Enterprise licenses list at $168 to $296.
03
How much does Milestone XProtect cost per camera?
At a US reseller a device license costs $109 on Express+, $177 on Professional+, $282 on Expert and $345 on Corporate. Each system also needs a base license, and Care Plus adds $19.80 to $63 per camera a year.
04
Do exacqVision and XProtect licenses expire?
No. Both are perpetual and both keep recording if you stop renewing updates. What lapses is the right to new versions, and a lapsed exacqVision server pays a per server catch up fee to return to current software.
05
Do I need a new VMS to fix false motion alerts?
Usually not. Alerts come from the camera, so a new recorder receives the same noise. Classifying each event on the camera stream as person, vehicle or nothing fixes it and runs beside either system.
