01 The short answer

One base license per system, one device license per camera.

The edition sets the base price, the camera price and the ceiling. Care Plus is the yearly line that keeps you on current versions.

Milestone XProtect is sold in four paid editions: Express+, Professional+, Expert and Corporate. You buy one base license (BL) for the system, then one device license (DL) for every camera, microphone or other device you connect. Milestone does not publish a US price list, so the figures on this page come from Network Camera Store, a US reseller that lists each part number with a price. Your dealer may quote lower on volume.

The licenses themselves are perpetual. What recurs is Care Plus, Milestone's subscription for product updates and support. Milestone's pricing page says Care Plus is required to get product updates and is mandatory for the first year on XProtect Corporate, and the reseller listing says the same for Expert. Skip it later and the system keeps recording, but it stops receiving new versions.

For fifteen cameras the licenses come to $1,664 on Express+, $3,179 on Professional+, $6,329 on Expert and $8,517 on Corporate. Five years with Care Plus renewed every year brings those to $3,149, $5,654, $12,044 and $16,262.

XProtect licenses are bound to a software license code, so the base, every device and Care Plus are counted together on one order.

Care Plus is sold in one month, one, two, three and five year terms, and the same part numbers exist with a Care Premium prefix for the higher support level. Expert and Corporate carry Care Plus on the base as well as on every device. On Express+ and Professional+ the reseller lists Care Plus on the device license only, so that is how the totals below count it.

Add-ons are priced separately and can swamp the camera licenses. XProtect LPR, for license plate recognition, lists at $9,975 for one camera device license, and each add-on needs the matching Care Plus line. If a quote includes LPR, Smart Wall or Incident Manager, price them as their own rows. Hardware is a different page: the Milestone Husky price page totals recorders that ship without these licenses.

Fifteen camera XProtect license cost over five years with Care Plus. Express+ 3,149 dollars, Professional+ 5,654, Expert 12,044, Corporate 16,262, MotionDetection Operate tier 4,440. Express+ $3,149 Professional+ $5,654 Expert $12,044 Corporate $16,262 Our alerts, 5 yr $4,440

Fifteen cameras, five years, licenses plus Care Plus renewed yearly. The last bar is not a recording license; it is our yearly alert layer, shown because many sites price licenses to fix alerts.

Express+ fits one building with one server and up to 48 cameras, and it is the cheapest by a wide margin. The Express+ to Professional+ upgrade cost post prices the step at 15, 30 and 48 cameras. Professional+ is the step when you need a second recording server, several sites or camera edge storage. Expert is for failover, so a dead recording server does not leave a gap, and for federating sites. Corporate adds Smart Wall and the central role in a federated system. Milestone's older Essential+ edition, which was free for eight cameras, is gone; our XProtect Essential+ replacement cost post prices that move for an eight camera site.

MotionDetection Operate, alerts only

Care Plus per year
$888.00
Five years with Care Plus

Five years here means the licenses once plus five years of Care Plus. A site that stops renewing after year one pays the up front column and nothing else, but it freezes on the version it has. Cameras are the other lever: every extra camera adds its device license and a Care Plus line forever, so a 30 camera Expert system is not twice the cost of 15 but close to it. The terms and the Care Premium support level are broken down in our Milestone Care Plus price post. For the same fifteen cameras on other platforms, the video management software comparison prices DW Spectrum, Wisenet WAVE, AXIS Camera Station and exacqVision per camera.

05 If the real problem is alerts

XProtect licenses record your cameras. They do not classify the motion.

Many XProtect owners price more device licenses or an edition upgrade because motion alarms on older or third party cameras are noise. A license will not change that.

Stays on XProtect

Recording, Smart Client, alarms, maps, and every base, device and Care Plus license you own.

Added beside it

Classification of each motion event on cameras that cannot classify, as person, vehicle, animal or nothing.

Where alerts go

Email, Slack or a webhook with a cropped still. The Operate tier keeps 30 days of events for 5 users.

What it costs

$888 a year for 15 cameras, $2,988 a year for 60, published on our pricing page. No hardware.

XProtect records and manages ONVIF cameras from many makers, but the events it receives come from the camera. A modern AI camera sends classified events; an older or third party camera sends whatever its motion detector decides. MotionDetection reads the RTSP stream of each camera, the same stream XProtect records, and installs nothing on the XProtect server. If you are weighing AI hardware instead, the AI NVR software comparison prices that route.

06 Ordering

How to order XProtect licenses without overpaying.

  1. 1

    Count devices and sites

Every camera needs a device license. More than 48 cameras on a server, a second recording server or a second site rules out Express+.

  2. 2

    Pick the edition by ceiling

Edition changes later mean trading in licenses. Milestone says Care Plus includes a trade-in program with full credit toward a more advanced variant, so keep Care Plus current if you may move up.

  3. 3

Decide the Care Plus term now

Terms of one, two, three and five years are sold. Multi-year terms are ordered with the licenses, which avoids a gap in updates.

  4. 4

Ask the dealer for part numbers

Compare the quote line by line with the table above. A quote with no Care Plus line is either a mistake or a system that will not update.

07 Asked while pricing XProtect licenses

Milestone XProtect license questions buyers ask before ordering.

01

How much does a Milestone XProtect license cost per camera?

At a US reseller in October 2026 a device license costs $109 on Express+, $177 on Professional+, $282 on Expert and $345 on Corporate. Each system also needs one base license, from $29 on Express+ up to $3,342 on Corporate, and Care Plus renews the update rights each year.

02

Is Milestone XProtect free?

No longer. XProtect Essential+, the free edition for eight cameras, was discontinued and cannot be activated after January 1, 2026. The cheapest edition now is Express+, a $29 base license plus $109 per camera at a US reseller, so eight cameras cost $901 once before Care Plus.

03

What is Milestone Care Plus?

Care Plus is Milestone's yearly subscription for product updates and support. It is priced per license, for example $19.80 per camera a year on Express+ and $63 on Corporate. Milestone requires it for the first year on Corporate, and the reseller listing says the same for Expert.

04

Do XProtect licenses expire?

No. Base and device licenses are perpetual. If you stop renewing Care Plus the system keeps recording, but it no longer receives new XProtect versions. Renewing later means catching up on Care Plus for the gap, so many sites buy a multi-year term with the licenses.

05

What is the difference between XProtect Express+ and Professional+?

Express+ allows one recording server, one site and 48 cameras per recording server. Professional+ removes those limits and adds edge storage support. The price difference is $495 on the base and $68 more per camera, so fifteen cameras cost $1,664 on Express+ and $3,179 on Professional+.

06

Does XProtect work with third party cameras?

Yes. XProtect records ONVIF cameras from many makers, each on one device license. Analytics events come from the camera, so an older camera without classification sends plain motion alarms, which is where a separate classification layer on the same stream helps.

Keep XProtect recording. Get alerts that mean something.
