Vivotek VSS license price per camera for VAST Security Station Standard and Pro after VAST 2

VAST Security Station is licensed per camera, once, and it is cheap. A VSS Standard camera license costs $34.50 at a US reseller and Standard includes 8 free licenses, so fifteen cameras cost $241.50. A VSS Professional license is $68.25 with none free. The catch for older sites is that VAST 2 licenses do not carry over, so every camera moving off VAST 2 needs a new VSS key.
  • Licensing rules read from VIVOTEK's own VSS installer guide, datasheet and user manual
  • Prices from a US reseller's live listings, each with its part number

01 The short answer

Three facts decide what a VIVOTEK site pays for VSS.

VIVOTEK replaced VAST 2 with VAST Security Station in 2023. The license model changed with it, and the free allowance shrank for most sites.

Standard is $34.50 a camera

With 8 cameras free

The 8 free Standard licenses work for VIVOTEK or third party ONVIF cameras alike. Every camera after the eighth needs one Standard license, part VIO715000003.

Pro is $68.25 a camera

No free licenses

Professional adds failover, the Matrix video wall, Re-Search and virtual machine support. It is priced per camera only, with no server or base license.

VAST 2 keys stop counting

End of life December 31, 2025

VIVOTEK's migration manual says VAST 2 camera licenses become invalid on VSS. Recordings and the camera list move across, the licenses do not.

02 VSS editions

VAST Security Station comes in four editions, and only two of them cost money.

Lite looks like the old VAST 2 deal, 32 VIVOTEK cameras for nothing, but it drops alarms and Deep Search and refuses any camera that is not VIVOTEK. A business that wants motion alerts sent anywhere lands on Standard. VIVOTEK's older migration manual tells sites to pick Standard below 128 channels, while the current specification allows 256 per server, so ask your dealer which figure applies to the version you install.

Deep Search, the attribute and scene search that makes VSS look modern in a demo, depends on the camera model. VIVOTEK says similar appearance search needs its AI cameras. On a third party camera, or a VIVOTEK camera from before its deep learning line, VSS records and searches by time and motion, like VAST 2 did.

The list column is what Adorama and A1 Security Cameras show as the regular price in search listings, and A1 sells the Standard license for about $41 and Pro for about $72. So $34.50 to $41 for Standard and $68.25 to $72 for Pro is a fair US street range.

There is no annual fee line because VIVOTEK sells none. A VSS key is a one time purchase, and VIVOTEK's service policy commits to at least two years of support for each VSS version. Failover, the video wall and the analytics search are edition features, not separate part numbers.

04 Moving off VAST 2

What a VAST 2 site has to buy to stay supported.

VAST 2 reached end of sales on July 31, 2023, end of maintenance on July 31, 2025 and end of life on December 31, 2025. VIVOTEK no longer provides support, software files or license activation for it.

Step 1

Upgrade to VAST 2.13 first

VIVOTEK's migration tool only reads version 2.13. VAST 1 cannot be migrated at all and has to be set up fresh.

Step 2

Run the migration

The camera list, recordings and most settings carry over. The VAST 2 camera licenses become invalid, and VAST 1, VAST 2 and dongle licenses are not compatible with VSS.

Step 3

Count what is not free

VAST 2 gave 32 VIVOTEK cameras free. Standard gives 8 of any brand. A site with 20 VIVOTEK cameras goes from $0 to 12 Standard licenses, $414.

Step 4

Watch for forced Pro

NR-v2 recorders, NS CMS stations and virtual machine installs migrate into VSS Professional and cannot switch to Standard, so every camera there needs the $68.25 license.

VIVOTEK ran a VAST 2 to VSS Professional migration promotion at launch in 2023. It has ended, and we could not confirm its terms, so budget the licenses at full price unless your dealer offers otherwise in writing.

Person and vehicle alerts on 15 cameras while VSS keeps recording

VSS is the cheapest per camera license on any page we keep, and if what you need is a supported recorder for VIVOTEK cameras, buy it. Our row is for a different buyer: a site whose cameras are older VIVOTEK models or a mix of brands, where VSS records fine but motion alerts fire on headlights, rain and shadows, because those cameras send pixel motion and VSS has nothing better to read. For comparison, the same fifteen cameras cost $1,121 to $1,446 on DW Spectrum licenses, and the per camera totals for Synology Surveillance Station licenses and QNAP QVR Pro licenses are on their own pages.

06 License rules

Six VSS license rules that decide whether a key survives a server swap.

Bound to five components

A key is tied to the motherboard, CPU, graphics card, RAM and network card. Change three or more and the license stops being valid.

Three transfers

A license can be moved to new hardware up to three times, through your distributor or VIVOTEK support. Plan server replacements with that count in mind.

Virtual machines

On a VM the key follows the network card MAC addresses and the VM UUID, and only Professional supports VMware or Hyper-V.

14 day grace

Add more cameras than you have licenses and VSS gives 14 days to activate the rest before the extra cameras stop.

One key, any brand

The same Standard or Pro license covers a VIVOTEK camera or an ONVIF camera from another maker.

No downgrade by key

Moving from Pro back to Standard is not done with a license. Paid licenses go back through the distributor.

VIVOTEK states that its products comply with NDAA Section 889 and align with TAA, with research and manufacturing in Taiwan. That is a vendor self declaration, but it is the reason some US sites move from Hikvision or Dahua to VIVOTEK. If that is your situation, the iVMS-4200 alternative and Dahua DSS Pro license price pages cover the software side of keeping or replacing those cameras.

07 Where VSS wins

Four things VAST Security Station does that this product does not.

  • It records and stores

Continuous video on your own server or NVR. We keep events and their crops, not continuous recordings.

  • AI search on VIVOTEK AI cameras

Deep Search and Re-Search read the metadata VIVOTEK deep learning cameras produce. On those cameras VSS already filters people and vehicles.

  • It runs without internet

Recording, playback and alarms run on site. Our classification runs as a service, so the site needs an outbound connection.

  • Hundreds of cameras

Professional reaches 320 cameras per server and 22,400 per system. Our largest plan covers 120 cameras.

08 What buyers ask at this point

Vivotek VSS license questions that come up while you are pricing it.

01

How much is a Vivotek VSS license?

At Network Camera Store, a US reseller, a VSS Standard camera license (VIO715000003) is $34.50 and a VSS Professional camera license (VIO715000004) is $68.25. Regular prices are $46 and $91. Each license covers one camera, is bought once and has no annual fee.

02

How many free licenses does VSS Standard include?

Eight. VSS Standard includes 8 free camera licenses that work for VIVOTEK or third party ONVIF cameras, plus 192 free licenses for cameras behind VIVOTEK ND or NV NVR substations. Professional includes none, and VSS Lite gives 32 free licenses for VIVOTEK cameras only.

03

Do VAST 2 licenses work in VAST Security Station?

No. VIVOTEK's migration manual says VAST 2 camera licenses become invalid after migration and VSS camera licenses must be activated. The camera list, recordings and most settings carry over. VAST 2 reached end of life on December 31, 2025.

04

What is the difference between VSS Standard and VSS Pro?

Standard covers up to 256 cameras per server with 8 free licenses. Professional has no free licenses but adds failover, the Matrix video wall, Re-Search, Case Vault, GIS, virtual machine support and up to 320 cameras per server. Upgrading costs $34.50 per camera.

05

Can I transfer a VSS license to a new server?

Yes, up to three times, through your distributor or VIVOTEK support. A license is bound to the motherboard, CPU, graphics card, RAM and network card, and changing three or more of them invalidates it until it is transferred.

06

Does VSS have person and vehicle detection?

On VIVOTEK AI cameras, yes, through Deep Search and smart VCA events from the camera. On older VIVOTEK or third party cameras VSS relies on the camera's own motion. A detection layer such as MotionDetection adds person and vehicle alerts to any camera stream.

VSS keeps recording. The alerts can get smarter today.
