Hanwha AI Box price for the AIB-800 and AIB-800A, per camera and for a whole site

The Hanwha AI Box is an 8 channel appliance that adds person, vehicle, face and plate detection to cameras that have none. An AIB-800 costs $2,548.23 at a US reseller and an AIB-800A $3,309.77 to $4,166.88, against a $4,350 list price, so the box works out to $319 to $521 per camera when all 8 channels are used. There is no monthly fee, but it records nothing, and it will not read cameras through an existing NVR or DVR.

01 The short answer

Three facts decide what the Hanwha AI Box really costs a site.

Hanwha launched the AIB-800 in May 2024 to bring AI to existing non-AI cameras without replacing them. The price on the box is simple. The site total depends on these three things.

Eight cameras per box

Recommended at Full HD, 10 fps

Every box tops out at 8 channels. Nine cameras means two boxes, so the per camera price jumps at 9, 17 and 25 cameras.

It does not record

Your VMS still does

Neither datasheet lists storage. The box analyzes and sends events and metadata to WAVE, SSM, Genetec, Milestone or its web viewer. Recording licenses stay a separate line.

Cameras must connect directly

No NVR or DVR streams

Hanwha lists any NVR or DVR and third party encoders as unsupported. Third party ONVIF cameras are limited, with compatibility not guaranteed.

The AIB-800 and AIB-800A share one spec sheet. On Hanwha's datasheets the only feature difference is that the A model supports rack mount installation. Both run on an NVIDIA Orin NX 8 GB module, draw 28 W from a 12 V adapter, and have one gigabit network port, 8 alarm inputs and 4 relay outputs. There are no PoE ports, so the cameras stay on your existing switch.

Hanwha's page says the box avoids recurring costs, and we found no per channel AI license for the standard models. The one subscription in the family is the Lumeo bundle on the LU version, which is a third party analytics platform renewed yearly.

03 What it reads

What the AIB-800 detects, and which cameras it can actually read.

Everything below is from Hanwha's current AIB-800A datasheet.

Cameras behind a recorder never reach the box. Hanwha lists any NVR or DVR as unsupported.

What the AI Box does

The NVR line matters more than it looks. A typical small business has its cameras plugged into the PoE ports of an NVR, on the recorder's private network, where the box cannot reach them one by one. Getting them onto the AI Box means moving the cameras to a switch the box can see. A hands on review in PSI magazine also found that only some third party ONVIF cameras were discovered and manual adds failed with an authentication error, which is the practical meaning of "limited" on the datasheet. Test your camera models before buying boxes for a whole site.

Person and vehicle alerts on 15 streams, including cameras behind your NVR

Over five years the two routes land close to each other on 15 cameras, which makes the deciding factor fit rather than price. The AI Box is a one time purchase that runs on site with no internet connection, which is exactly right for some buyers. Our row is for a different site: one whose cameras hang off an NVR the box cannot read, a mix of brands outside Hanwha's certified list, or a camera count that lands just past a multiple of 8.

The WAVE row uses the $140.25 per camera license from our Wisenet WAVE license price post. If you record somewhere else, the per camera cost on DW Spectrum or Axis Camera Station slots into the same line.

Check these before ordering boxes

Are your cameras on a switch, or plugged into the NVR's own PoE ports?

How many are Hanwha, and are the others on a tested ONVIF list?

Does your count land just above 8, 16 or 24?

Hanwha's recommended load is 8 cameras at Full HD and 10 frames per second per box.

05 The other route

How a detection layer adds the same alerts without a box on the shelf.

Step 1

Point it at the stream

Give the console the RTSP sub stream of each camera, or of each NVR channel. The recorder keeps recording as it does today.

Step 2

Draw the zones

Mark the gate, the door or the lot. Motion outside the zone is ignored before anything is classified.

Step 3

Classify each event

Every motion event is checked for a person, vehicle, animal or package. Headlights, rain and shadows are dropped.

Step 4

Send what matters

Person and vehicle events go to email, Slack or a webhook with a cropped image, to whoever is on shift.

Try one of your own clips in the demo at the top before deciding. The person detection camera software page shows the alert format, and RTSP camera software lists the stream paths for most camera and NVR brands.

06 Where the AI Box wins

Four things the Hanwha AI Box does that this product does not.

  • It runs with no internet

Analysis happens on the box in your building. Our classification runs as a service, so the site needs an outbound connection.

  • Faces and plates

The box reads license plates and face attributes. We classify people, vehicles, animals and packages, and do not do face or plate recognition.

  • Counting and heatmaps

People counting, vehicle counting, queue management and heatmaps come with the box. We send alerts, not footfall analytics.

  • No recurring fee

You pay once. In the sixth year at 15 cameras our yearly price passes the cost of two AIB-800 boxes.

07 What buyers ask at this point

Hanwha AI Box questions that come up while you are pricing it.

01

How much does the Hanwha AI Box cost?

At US resellers, the Hanwha AIB-800 is $2,548.23 at Surveillance-Video and the AIB-800A is $3,309.77 there or $4,166.88 at Network Camera Store. CDW and SHI show a $4,350 list price for the AIB-800. Each box covers up to 8 cameras.

02

Does the Hanwha AI Box work with non-Hanwha cameras?

Partly. Hanwha certifies its own non-AI cameras and encoders and lists third party ONVIF and RTSP cameras as limited, with compatibility not 100 percent guaranteed. Any NVR, DVR or third party encoder is unsupported, so cameras must connect to the box directly.

03

How many cameras does one AI Box support?

Eight channels per box. Hanwha recommends 8 cameras at Full HD and 10 frames per second. A site with 15 cameras needs two boxes, and a site with 17 needs three.

04

Does the Hanwha AI Box record video?

No storage is listed on the AIB-800 or AIB-800A datasheet. The box analyzes video and sends events and metadata to a VMS such as WAVE, SSM, Genetec or Milestone, which keeps recording. Only the open developer version has an SSD.

05

What is the difference between the AIB-800 and the AIB-800A?

On Hanwha's datasheets the AIB-800A adds rack mount installation and is otherwise the same: 8 channels, NVIDIA Orin NX 8 GB, 28 W, the same detection and attributes. It sells for about $760 to $1,620 more at US resellers.

06

Is there a subscription for the Hanwha AI Box?

Not for the standard models. Hanwha says the box avoids recurring costs and we found no per channel AI license. The AIB-800A-LU bundle includes four one year Lumeo Enterprise licenses, a third party analytics platform that renews yearly.

Your recorder keeps recording. The alerts can get smarter today.
