Upgrading AXIS Camera Station 5 to AXIS Camera Station Pro on your own server costs $19 per license at US resellers, as part 03250-001, and each version 5 license you upgrade becomes a 5 year AXIS Camera Station Pro subscription license. On an AXIS S11, S12, S21 or S22 recorder the upgrade is free for the life of the hardware. Axis supports version 5 until September 30, 2027, so a fifteen camera site on its own server is looking at $285 to move, then its first renewal in 2031.
Axis publishes the rules but not the prices, so every dollar figure here is a named reseller listing and every rule is from Axis's own installation and migration guide or the Axis FAQ. This is written by a competitor in the detection half of the market, not the recording half, and the second to last section explains where that matters.
The short answer
There were two ways to own AXIS Camera Station 5: a perpetual Core device license (0879-010) for an Axis camera and a perpetual Universal device license (0879-020) for a third party camera, both bought once and kept forever. AXIS Camera Station Pro dropped the perpetual model on your own hardware. Its licenses are 1 year or 5 year subscriptions managed in AXIS License Manager, and only licenses on an Axis recorder stay lifetime, tied to that recorder's motherboard. The upgrade license is the bridge between the two models: one 03250-001 per existing version 5 license, at a 1 to 1 ratio, and out the other side comes a 5 year Pro subscription for that device. Axis ran the conversion free until March 1, 2026. Since then it is $19 a license, and a 90 day trial starts the moment you upgrade the server, so nothing stops while the order goes through.

The last row is the one that trips people up. A version 5 Core license plus its upgrade is $107, and a 5 year Pro Core license bought outright is $88 to $94. If you are adding cameras during the move, buy them as Pro licenses and upgrade only the licenses you already hold. The full current price list, the 1 year parts, the recorder expansion licenses and the per camera arithmetic are on the Axis Camera Station license page.
Who upgrades for free
Axis's version 5 migration guide splits the world in two. If the server is an AXIS S11, S12, S21 or S22 series recorder, you upgrade for free during the lifetime of the hardware and every included and registered license becomes a lifetime license tied to that recorder. Nothing to buy, nothing to renew, until the recorder itself is replaced. That is a better deal than the one version 5 owners had, because the tied licenses now cover Pro features that did not exist in version 5.
Everyone else, meaning a Windows server you built, a Dell you bought through the integrator, or a virtual machine, had a free window that closed on March 1, 2026. After that date each installed license needs a 03250-001. There is a quiet third group: sites that bought licenses for cameras they later removed. The migration guide says to upgrade first, then read AXIS License Manager for the number of upgrade licenses your reported usage actually needs, and decide whether to convert only enough to cover the cameras in use. Spare version 5 licenses do not have to be paid for twice.
What a version 5 license turns into, and what it stops being
A version 5 license was yours indefinitely and lived on the server. After the upgrade it is a 5 year subscription that lives in AXIS License Manager under your organization, with a renewal date shared by every application license in that organization. In year six it renews at the then current Core or Universal price, $88 to $94 or $166 to $169 for another five years at today's listings, or $29 to $31 and $49 to $52 a year on the 1 year parts. Axis gives a 30 day grace period at renewal, and if it lapses the server keeps recording and keeps running action rules but loses live view, playback, snapshots and export until it is licensed again.
What you gain for giving up perpetuity is the current product. AXIS Camera Station Pro adds Smart search 2 with free text search on the server, a web client, optional cloud connectivity and cloud storage, AXIS Camera Station Secure Entry for door controllers, the Data Insight Dashboard, and the 100 percent growth allowance: you can double the device count during a subscription year and stay licensed until the next annual review. Version 5 gets none of that, and after September 30, 2027 it gets no updates, no maintenance and no testing either. It will keep running. It will just be software nobody fixes.
The Axis Camera Station 5 to Pro migration, and where it costs time
The money is $19 a license. The time is in the prerequisites, and Axis lists them plainly. The server must be on version 5.58 or later first; anything older than 4.31.018 has to step through 5.24 on the way. Every client PC has to move to the Pro client, because a version 5 client cannot talk to a Pro server. The default ports changed, so a firewall rule someone wrote in 2019 may need editing. You need to know which organization the server will be onboarded to in AXIS License Manager. And the upgrade is one way: once it starts you cannot go back to version 5.
If you are moving to new hardware at the same time, Axis's guide has you install the same version 5 build on the new server first, copy the database files from ProgramData, copy component settings and recordings, restore the passwords the database does not carry (devices, SMTP, network shares, scheduled exports), and only then run the Pro upgrade and onboard. Budget an afternoon for a single server with fifteen cameras. Budget more if the site has AXIS Camera Station Secure Entry, because its database and cardholder photos move separately.
Fifteen cameras, whether to stay, upgrade or move
Software only, US reseller single unit listings, no server hardware, no cameras and no labor. The columns run from now to the end of 2031, which is roughly the first Pro renewal for a site that upgrades this year.

Read that honestly. For a site on its own server the upgrade is $19 a camera for five more years of a maintained product, which is cheaper than any other row including doing nothing, once you price the first unpatched vulnerability after 2027. The renewal in 2031 is the real cost, and it is a line an integrator will invoice every five years from then on. If that invoice goes through a finance team rather than one person's card, it is exactly the kind of recurring vendor bill that accounts payable automation is built to catch, match to the PO and approve without anyone re-reading a five year old quote. The DW Spectrum license pricing row is there because it is the perpetual alternative people reach for, and because it is a migration project, not an upgrade.
What the upgrade does not fix
A good number of version 5 sites are upgrading because the alerts are bad, not because the recording is. It is worth being clear about what Pro changes there. AXIS Camera Station Pro's object classification, Smart search by person or vehicle, and free text search draw on AXIS Object Analytics, which Axis includes at no cost on cameras with a machine learning or deep learning processing unit. If your cameras are recent Axis models, the upgrade genuinely improves the alerts, and you should stop reading here.
If your cameras are the ones that were on the wall when version 5 was installed, an AXIS P3367 or an M3006 or anything else from the pre 2020 range, the upgrade changes the client and the license model and leaves the trigger exactly where it was: the camera's own video motion detection, which fires on headlights, rain and the flag by the gate. The same is true of every third party camera on a Universal license. Axis's answer is to replace those cameras. Ours is to leave AXIS Camera Station Pro recording and run classification on the RTSP stream the server is already pulling: our software connects to the camera or the stream, finds motion with its own background model, labels each event person, vehicle, animal or package, and sends only the classes you chose to email, a webhook or Slack. The RTSP camera software page shows the stream URL format Axis cameras use, and the video analytics software price page has the per camera figure. If you are weighing a different recording platform altogether, the video management software comparison puts Axis's license model next to Milestone, Genetec, Avigilon, Eagle Eye and Nx Witness.
Questions buyers ask
What actually changes between Axis Camera Station 5 and Pro?
The license model and the feature set. Version 5 licenses are perpetual and stay on the server; Pro licenses on your own hardware are 1 or 5 year subscriptions in AXIS License Manager, and on an Axis recorder they are tied to the hardware for life. Pro adds Smart search 2 with free text search, a web client, cloud connectivity, Secure Entry access control and the Data Insight Dashboard. Version 5 is supported until September 30, 2027.
How much does the Axis Camera Station Pro upgrade license cost?
Part 03250-001 lists at $19 at Affinitech and Network Camera Store, one per existing version 5 license, and converts it into a 5 year AXIS Camera Station Pro subscription license. On an AXIS S11, S12, S21 or S22 recorder no upgrade license is needed, because Axis upgrades those for free during the life of the hardware.
Is Axis Camera Station 5 free?
The download was free and still is, but recording a device in version 5 needs a perpetual Core or Universal license, which sold for about $88 and $166 at US resellers. Those licenses are still listed, but buying one today only makes sense with a $19 upgrade in the same order, and at that point a 5 year Pro license is the same money or less.
How does the Axis Camera Station 5 to Pro migration work?
Update version 5 to 5.58 or later, buy the upgrade licenses, run the Pro installer on the same server, then re-license by onboarding the server to an organization in AXIS License Manager and redeeming the upgrade keys. A 90 day trial starts automatically so the system stays fully functional while the licenses are processed. Every client PC must be updated to the Pro client, and the upgrade cannot be reversed.
What happens to my Axis Camera Station 5 licenses after the upgrade?
Each one you convert becomes a 5 year Pro subscription license for one device, with a renewal date aligned to your organization's. Licenses you do not convert stay perpetual version 5 licenses, which is only useful if you keep a version 5 server running somewhere. Axis suggests checking reported usage after the upgrade and converting only as many licenses as you have devices.
Can I keep using Axis Camera Station 5 after September 2027?
Yes. Axis says version 5 will no longer be developed, maintained or tested after September 30, 2027, not that it will stop working. The risks are unpatched vulnerabilities, no support for new Axis cameras or AXIS OS versions, and no help from Axis when something breaks. For a server that faces the internet in any way, that is a poor trade against $19 a license.
