Almost every list of the best video analytics software is a list of whoever pays the most for the placement, which is why they all rank the same three vendors and none of them says what anything costs. This one is written by a competitor, which you should hold against it, so it is built to be checkable: every price below is either published by the vendor or explicitly marked as not published, and the section near the end is about the things other products do that this one does not.

How we compared them

Four questions decide this category, and everything else is detail.

  1. Does it work with the cameras already on your wall? If the answer is no, the real price includes replacing every camera, and the software price is the small number.
  2. What does it actually detect? Pixel change with a person filter bolted on is a different product from object classification, even when the marketing page uses the same words for both.
  3. Can you find out what it costs without a phone call? Published pricing is a signal about how the vendor expects to sell, and a quote-only vendor is telling you there will be a process.
  4. Does it do face recognition? In Illinois, Texas and Washington this is not a preference, it is a legal exposure your counsel will ask about, so it belongs in the comparison and not in a footnote.

Two columns in that table do most of the work. The camera column separates the products that sell you a system from the products that sell you software, and the price column separates the vendors who expect a self serve purchase from the vendors who expect a sales cycle. Neither is a criticism on its own. A fifty site retailer with a security team probably should be talking to a vendor. A self storage operator with fourteen cameras should not have to.

The enterprise platforms: Verkada, Rhombus, Spot AI

These are genuinely good systems and they are not competing for the same buyer we are. Verkada and Rhombus replace the camera, which means the analytics run on hardware the vendor controls, the firmware is theirs, and the support conversation has exactly one party in it. That is worth real money to an organisation with a hundred sites and no local IT.

What you should know before the call: the hardware is published, the software mostly is not. Verkada lists camera MSRP from $799, and Rhombus publishes a complete list covering cameras from $399 to $3,299 and a Professional licence at $149 a camera a year. Verkada's licence and everything Spot AI sells are still quoted. All three price per camera on a multi year term, so ask specifically what happens at renewal: a system whose cameras stop being useful when the licence lapses prices differently in year four than it does in year one. Spot AI is the interesting middle: it works with cameras you already own, which is our own pitch, but it puts an appliance on site to do it and it still sells through a quote. If you have a hundred plus cameras and want somebody else to own the box, that trade is defensible. If you have twelve cameras, the appliance and the sales cycle are both larger than the problem.

On face recognition, all three offer it in some form. If your sites are in Illinois, Texas or Washington, get your counsel involved before that feature is enabled rather than after. Our own position, and the reason enterprise security camera systems is a page on this site rather than a paragraph, is that we do not build it at all.

Software for cameras you already own: Eagle Eye, Camio, us

This is the group worth most of your attention if the cameras are already installed and working.

Eagle Eye Networks is a cloud video management system first and an analytics product second. It takes ONVIF and RTSP cameras through a bridge, and its pricing is per camera per month, tiered mostly by how long you keep the video. If what you want is cloud recording with analytics on top, it is a stronger fit than we are, because we do not store your video at all.

Camio is the closest product to ours on price and on posture: existing cameras, per camera per month in the low tens of dollars, and a real model doing real classification. The difference is framing. Camio is built around searching footage after the fact, and searching well. We are built around the alert channel: the product exists to make the notifications on your phone trustworthy again, and the event timeline is the evidence that it worked.

Motiondetection, which is us, is the cheapest published option in this group and the only one in the whole table that will never do face recognition. The pricing is on the video analytics software price page in full, four tiers, no free plan, and the arithmetic works out between $8.32 and $12.25 a camera a month depending on the tier.

The self hosted end: Frigate, Blue Iris, ZoneMinder

Frigate is the best free software in this category and it is not close. Real object detection, excellent zone handling, a proper integration with Home Assistant, and a community that answers questions. It expects a machine to run on and an accelerator to run fast, and it expects you to be the administrator forever. The honest total is written up in open source video analytics and the cost nobody prices in.

Blue Iris is a Windows recorder with the broadest camera compatibility of anything here and a one time licence that costs less than one month of any subscription in this list. Its built in motion detection is still fundamentally pixel change, so the alert storm problem needs an external detector wired in behind it, which is a project rather than a setting.

ZoneMinder is the oldest of these and the most demanding. If you already run it, you know whether you want to keep running it.

The rule of thumb that holds across every one of these: free software is free of licence cost, not free of hardware, and never free of your time. At four cameras that maths usually favours self hosting. At twenty, with somebody's payroll attached to the maintenance, it usually does not.

Where we lose

Four places, plainly.

  • Live stream ingestion is what we email you about, not what the demo does. The demo on this site runs on uploaded and bundled clips, in your browser. Frigate and Blue Iris detect on a continuous live feed today, on your own machine, and that is a real difference.
  • We do not store video. If you want cloud recording and retention, Eagle Eye is built for that and we are not. We hold events, not footage.
  • We have no appliance. If your policy requires that inference happens on a box inside your network, Spot AI and Frigate can satisfy that today and we cannot.
  • We will never do face recognition. For most buyers that is the reason to pick us. If your use case genuinely requires identifying a specific individual, we are the wrong product and no amount of pricing fixes that.

How to choose in ten minutes

Answer these in order and the list usually collapses to one or two names.

  1. Are your cameras staying? If yes, delete Verkada and Rhombus from the list, whatever the demo looked like, and start from the Verkada competitors and alternatives comparison instead.
  2. Do you need the video kept in the cloud, or only the events? Video means Eagle Eye. Events mean Camio or us.
  3. Is there somebody whose job includes maintaining a Linux box? If yes, price Frigate honestly, including the accelerator and the hours. If no, do not put it on the shortlist to be polite.
  4. Do you need an answer without a sales call? That leaves the published prices: Blue Iris, Frigate and this one.
  5. Will legal ask about biometrics? Then the no biometrics answer is worth writing into the shortlist as a column of its own.

Whatever you shortlist, test it on your worst camera and not your best one. The one pointing at a road under an infrared lamp in the rain is the camera that decides whether you keep the product, and the physics of why it misbehaves is worth ten minutes before you blame any vendor. You can put a clip from that camera through the demo in about a minute, and the numbers you get back are computed on your own machine.
