Milestone XProtect Express+ allows one recording server, one site and 48 devices per recording server. Past any of those you need Professional+. At a US reseller the difference is $495 on the base license plus $68 more per camera, so the move costs $1,515 at 15 cameras, $2,535 at 30 and $3,759 at 48, before Care Plus, which also rises by $13.20 per camera a year. If the only thing pushing you up is a second building or a failover wish, price that against the alternatives below before you order.

Most Express+ owners hit the ceiling in one of two ways. A site adds cameras until the 48 limit is close, or a second location needs to be viewed from the same system. Both are ordinary growth, and both turn a $1,664 system into a $3,179 one for the same fifteen cameras. This page prices the step so you can budget it. Prices come from Network Camera Store on October 30, 2026, and Milestone does not publish a US list, so your dealer may quote lower on volume. The full part list is on our Milestone XProtect license cost page.

What Express+ limits

Limits come from Milestone's product comparison chart, which is dated, so confirm them against the current chart before you commit. Express+ allows one recording server and one site, with 48 devices per recording server. It does not include edge storage support, recording server failover or Smart Wall. Professional+ removes the server, site and device ceilings and adds edge storage support. Failover starts at Expert, so Professional+ does not fix a dead recording server leaving a gap.

A device here is not only a camera. Microphones and other devices count against the 48, so a site with 44 cameras and a handful of microphones can reach the limit sooner than the camera count suggests.

What the move to Professional+ costs

The difference is simple arithmetic: Professional+ base $524 against $29 for Express+ is $495, and a device license is $177 against $109, which is $68 per camera. Here it is at four sizes. The first column is what you would pay for the licenses on Express+, the second the same cameras on Professional+.

8

Express+ licenses
$29 + 8 x $109 = $901
Professional+ licenses
$524 + 8 x $177 = $1,940
Extra to buy Professional+
$1,039

15

Express+ licenses
$29 + 15 x $109 = $1,664
Professional+ licenses
$524 + 15 x $177 = $3,179
Extra to buy Professional+
$1,515

30

Express+ licenses
$29 + 30 x $109 = $3,299
Professional+ licenses
$524 + 30 x $177 = $5,834
Extra to buy Professional+
$2,535

48

Express+ licenses
$29 + 48 x $109 = $5,261
Professional+ licenses
$524 + 48 x $177 = $9,020
Extra to buy Professional+
$3,759

Above 48 cameras there is no Express+ row, because the system cannot grow past that on one server. A 60 camera site starts on Professional+ at $524 + 60 x $177 = $11,144 in licenses. Server hardware and Windows are separate lines on both editions.

The yearly line moves too

Care Plus is what keeps the system on current XProtect versions. On Express+ it is $19.80 per camera a year at the same reseller, and on Professional+ it is $33. At 15 cameras that is $297 against $495 a year, so the upgrade adds $198 every year on top of the one time $1,515. Over five years of Care Plus the fifteen camera totals are $3,149 on Express+ and $5,654 on Professional+. Trade-in credit and timing

Milestone's pricing page says Care Plus includes a trade-in program with full credit toward a more advanced variant. In practice that means an Express+ system with Care Plus current is in a better position to move up than one that let it lapse. How much credit the dealer applies to your specific licenses is Milestone's and the dealer's call, so ask for the upgrade quote with part numbers rather than assuming the table above is what you will pay. If you may outgrow Express+ within a year, the cheaper path is often to keep Care Plus current from the start.

Buying Professional+ on day one is also an option. At 15 cameras it costs $1,515 more than Express+ today, and it avoids a second install and a second round of paperwork. It only makes sense if you expect a second server or site within a couple of years, since otherwise you carry the extra $198 a year for a ceiling you never use.

When not to upgrade

Two reasons commonly push an Express+ owner toward Professional+, and neither always needs it. The first is a second building. That is a legitimate Professional+ case, because one site is an Express+ rule. The second is that alerts are noisy and someone assumes a bigger edition will fix it. It will not. XProtect receives the events the camera sends, so motion alarms from an older or third party camera stay noise on any edition.

If alerts are the real complaint, the cheaper step is a classification layer on the same RTSP streams, which reads each motion event as person, vehicle, animal or nothing and sends it by email, Slack or webhook with a cropped still. MotionDetection's Operate tier covers 15 cameras for $888 a year with no hardware, and it leaves your XProtect licenses and Care Plus term as they are. Before you spend $1,515 on an edition change, read what it fixes in our exacqVision vs Milestone XProtect cost comparison, which puts both systems on one table. And when the quote is ready, put the dealer on the calendar with a short booked call so part numbers get confirmed before anything is ordered.

Questions buyers ask

How many cameras does XProtect Express+ support?

Express+ supports 48 devices per recording server, with one recording server and one site. Devices include microphones and other connected units, so the practical camera count can be lower. Beyond 48 you need Professional+, which has no device limit.

How much does it cost to upgrade XProtect Express+ to Professional+?

At a US reseller in October 2026 the license difference is $495 on the base plus $68 per camera. That is $1,515 for 15 cameras and $3,759 for 48. Care Plus then costs $13.20 more per camera a year. Milestone's trade-in credit may reduce the cost, so request a dealer quote.

What is the difference between XProtect Express+ and Professional+?

Express+ allows one recording server, one site and 48 devices per server. Professional+ removes those limits and adds edge storage support. Neither has recording server failover, which starts at Expert.

Is XProtect Express+ worth it for 15 cameras?

For one building and one server, yes. Fifteen cameras cost $1,664 in licenses and $3,149 over five years with Care Plus, the lowest of any paid edition. It stops being right when a second site, a second server or growth past 48 devices is likely.

Does Care Plus have to be paid to upgrade?

Care Plus is what Milestone says carries the trade-in program toward a more advanced variant, so keep it current if you expect to move up. Without it the system keeps recording but is not entitled to new versions.
