XProtect Essential+ is discontinued. Milestone removed the free 8 camera edition with XProtect 2025 R2, and copies downloaded earlier could no longer activate licenses after January 1, 2026. The like for like replacement is XProtect Express+, at $29 for the base license and $109 per camera, so eight cameras cost $901 once plus Care Plus. Blue Iris, Agent DVR, DW Spectrum and Synology are the cheaper routes off Milestone.

Essential+ was the reason a lot of small offices, clinics and shops ran Milestone at all: eight cameras, one server, unlimited users and the same Smart Client the big sites use, for nothing. The end of it turns a free system into a purchase decision, usually on the day a server dies or someone tries to reinstall. Below is what Milestone actually ended, what staying on Milestone costs, and five alternatives priced for the same eight cameras. We sell a detection layer, not a recorder, and the comparison says where that matters.

What Milestone ended, and when

Milestone told partners in April 2025 that Essential+ was discontinued and no longer downloadable from XProtect 2025 R2 on. Customers who had downloaded an earlier version were not affected until January 1, 2026. After that date, the notice said, activation of Essential+ licenses for a previously downloaded copy would no longer be possible. The same notice ended sales of XProtect Rapid REVIEW.

A site that grew past 8 cameras already needed a paid edition

One thing Milestone has not said in public is whether an Essential+ system that was already activated keeps running indefinitely. Many still record today. The risk is not the next recording, it is the next change: a failed system drive, a new server, a Windows reinstall. At that point the product cannot be activated again, and the cameras stop being recorded until something else is installed.

Most Essential+ sites are one server and a mix of camera brands. The cameras stay; the software that records them is what changes.

The Milestone route, Express+

Express+ is now the entry XProtect edition. It keeps your Smart Client, your camera drivers and the way your staff already work, and Milestone's own comparison table now lists it at up to 100 devices on one recording server. These are US list prices at Network Camera Store:

Care Plus $33 a year per device

For eight cameras that is $901 in licenses, and $1,059.40 with a first year of Care Plus. Licenses are perpetual, so Care Plus is what keeps the next version available, not what keeps recording running. Ask the Milestone partner about the upgrade offer before ordering, because it is only available through a representative. If you want every edition side by side, the Milestone XProtect license cost page prices Express+ through Corporate for fifteen cameras. If the old server is also near the end, our Milestone Husky price page shows what a Husky IVO recorder adds, and it ships with no camera licenses either.

XProtect Essential+ alternatives side by side

Five routes that keep the cameras you own. All of them connect over ONVIF or RTSP, the same way Essential+ did, so the work is entering each camera's address and credentials again, not rewiring.

Prices are from our own pages, each re-read against the vendor or a US reseller in the last two weeks: Blue Iris license price, Agent DVR pricing, DW Spectrum license price and the Synology Surveillance Station license. The Agent DVR range is its Basic to Professional annual plan; DW Spectrum is eight single camera licenses at two resellers.

Express+ is the cheapest way to stay on Milestone and the least work for staff who know the Smart Client. Agent DVR is the cheapest overall, and DW Spectrum the cheapest with no recurring fee at all. None of the five years above includes a person alert that works on an older camera unless the product has its own AI, which is where the real difference between them sits.

Which one fits your site

You want nothing to change for the people who watch the video. Buy Express+. It is $901 for eight cameras, the client is the same and the migration is an upgrade, not a new install. Milestone's upgrade offer goes through a representative, so the first step is an email to them. An AI office assistant that drafts email can write and file that request while you price the alternatives, but get the offer in writing before you order.

The Essential+ server is old and you are replacing it anyway. Price the recorder and the software together. Agent DVR or Blue Iris on a new mini PC, or Synology if you would rather have a NAS than a Windows box.

Recording is fine, the alerts are the problem. Essential+ only had pixel motion, so every headlight and swaying branch sent a notification. Keep whichever recorder you choose and add person and vehicle alerts on top. That is what we sell: person detection on the cameras you already own, from the streams your recorder already pulls, and you can try it on one of your own clips in the demo above. The video management software guide compares the recorders by license model if you need a wider list.

Questions buyers ask

Is XProtect Essential+ still free?

No. Milestone discontinued XProtect Essential+ with the 2025 R2 release and it is no longer available to download. Copies downloaded before 2025 R2 could activate licenses only until January 1, 2026. The entry edition is now XProtect Express+, at $29 for the base license and $109 per camera at US list prices.

What replaced XProtect Essential+?

XProtect Express+ is Milestone's replacement, sold through partners with special upgrade offers available from a Milestone representative for business use. There is no free XProtect edition any more. Outside Milestone, Agent DVR, Blue Iris, DW Spectrum and Synology Surveillance Station are the common replacements for an eight camera site.

Does XProtect Essential+ still work after January 1, 2026?

Milestone's notice says only that activating Essential+ licenses is no longer possible after January 1, 2026. It does not say that running systems stop, and many still record. A reinstall, a new server or a hardware change that needs activation is where an Essential+ system fails, so plan the replacement before that happens.

How much does XProtect Express+ cost for 8 cameras?

$901 in licenses at US list prices: the $29 Express+ base license plus eight $109 device licenses. A year of Care Plus adds $19.80 per camera, $158.40 for eight, and five years of Care Plus is $74.25 per camera. Licenses are perpetual, so cameras keep recording if Care Plus lapses.

Can I upgrade from Essential+ to Express+ without reinstalling?

Yes, in the usual case. Essential+ and Express+ are the same XProtect software with a different license, so a partner applies the Express+ license to your existing installation and your cameras, users and settings stay. If your copy is older than the current release, the upgrade to a current version comes first.

Is there a free alternative to XProtect Essential+ for a business?

Not a supported one with commercial rights. Agent DVR and Blue Iris both require a paid plan for business use, and the free Netcam Studio build is frozen and unpatched. For a business the cheapest supported options are Agent DVR from $85.86 a year per server and DW Spectrum at about $75 per camera once.
